If you are going to be travelling with a toddler, and you have never stayed at a hotel before with them, you will want to take a few precautionary steps to keep them safe while away from home. Here are a few tips you can use while in a hotel to make sure your little one does not become injured.
Do An Evaluation First
Before you allow your toddler to explore the hotel room, do a quick check to make sure nothing was left behind by the previous guests. Bring your toddler into the room in a stroller, have someone else watch them out of the room, or instruct them to stay on the bed until you tell them the room is safe. Search the floor for safety pins, pieces of glass, pebbles, or any other small items that could cause injury or a choking hazard.
Child Proof The Room
Give the carpeting a quick spray of a germ killing agent before you allow your child to crawl around on the floor. If you do not have this on hand, place a sheet or blanket on the floor to appoint as your toddler's floor play area. When packing, bring along a roll of duck tape. This can be used to tape up window blinds so they cannot be reached, to place over outlets, and to attach washcloths over sharp edges on tables. Unplug all appliances and put them on top of a shelf or dresser where your child cannot reach them. Check the contents inside drawers and move them out of the way until you are going to check out of your room.
Make Rules About Locks
Whenever you are in your room, make sure you deadbolt it shut. You might take a shower or use the bathroom when your toddler is asleep and come out to find they had opened the hotel door and are roaming the halls. Make it a point to lock the door the minute everyone comes into the room so you do not forget it when you need to go into the bathroom.
In the bathroom, tell your child they need to keep the door open so you are sure they are safe while inside. Tell them they can keep the door open a crack and show them how much space they should leave the door ajar. They will most likely adhere to this rule if you give them an item to use to measure the door opening, such as a book to wedge in between the door and the opening.
